Did you know? 40% of all of the certified sustainable wineries in California are in Napa County. Let us introduce you to exceptional wines from one of the world’s premier winemaking regions, made by conscientious, responsible wineries. Pick and choose from these custom itineraries for inspiration – you really can’t go wrong.
As my granddad and I used to trudge through de-suckering his tomato patch, he would explain how the yellow flowers would soon become the fruit (vegetable?) that we’d gobble like apples. He called them “shirt-soakers” because that’s the result of this particular fresh tomato-eating technique! He’d also say things like, “We’re borrowing this land from you, and you’ll be borrowing it from your grandchildren.” That’s maybe why I’m so at home in the Napa Valley, where we can see and taste the commitment to our planet and our community that pays off now in great wine, natural beauty and soil health, while paying it forward.
Martin is an international wine consultant, winemaker, importer, educator, and frequent speaker and moderator recognized for his expertise in sustainability. As cofounder and copresident of the nonprofit diversity initiative Wine Unify, a cofounder of RISE Climate & Wine Symposium, and a first-generation American and the first Master of Wine of Mexican descent, and one of Wine Enthusiast’s 2015 “Top 40 under 40 Tastemakers,” Martin is definitely in the know about wine.
As a local winemaker and Napa Green board member, I support Napa Green because it aligns with my values of stewardship and sustainability. The program helps mitigate the environmental impact of wine production and fosters a culture of responsibility within the industry. Participating Napa Green wineries and vineyards contribute to the long-term health of our land and ensure that Napa Valley remains a thriving and beautiful region for future generations. The best part is that practicing a healthy ecology allows our members to focus on what we love – creating high-quality wines that are in harmony with nature, what the French would call terroir.
GIRLS’ TRIP! This sustainable wine tour is a celebration of women in Napa Valley, from winemakers to CEOs to owners, this itinerary shows some love for lady leadership! This selection of stops is perfect for day-trippers or overnighters from the Bay Area, exploring wineries near the cities of Napa and Yountville, but is geared toward those looking for the perfect mix of variety and sprawling settings that are great for groups.

Check out these stunning wineries from the bay to the forest to explore the wide range of ecosystems that Napa Valley has to explore.
There are two main drags in the Napa Valley that run roughly parallel – Highway 29 and the Silverado Trail. There are many incredible Napa Green wineries (easily identifiable with their green Napa Green Certified signs) right off these roadways. But this itinerary will take you to tucked away spots run by some powerhouse women, deeply dedicated to the stewardship of the Napa Valley.
An ideal day of tasting for me is three winery visits that give different experiences and provide a range of insights into our beautiful valley, while championing environmental practices that I hold dear.
This list is in no particular order, and represents some of my favourite (yes, I’m Australian and we put a ‘u’ in favourite) people in our beloved valley. This list is people focused for me. The ‘why’ behind each of these wineries and their teams is what I love about our Napa Green community. There are so many brilliant people in our industry who are able to remain buoyant and motivated in the face of a large and arduous task – making beautiful and soulful wines of time and place in the face of a warming climate – and they are the people I love to visit and enjoy the fruits of their labor.
As a culmination of a career spent in the wine business as a Sommelier and now a Vintner, it is an honor to say that part of my daily life now is consulting with Napa Green in the realm of sustainability and climate action in wine. On this journey I get to visit many wineries and experience intimate behind the scenes tours & tastings with the decision-makers that run these legendary places. During this time, I’ve learned that sustainability is a beautiful way of life and business.
This is not your typical itinerary – wetting your palate for wine producers that are difficult, perhaps impossible, to visit. However, if you are a wine connoisseur seeking exceptional wines from sustainability and climate leaders you should absolutely put in the effort to secure wines from Dominus, Lail, and ADAMVS.
Steal this itinerary! 🍷

“Sustainability is a beautiful way of life and business. These whole systems, regenerative practices are as essential and unique as the terroir we pride ourselves on here in Napa Valley… it’s truly inspiring to travel to different wineries and taste the fruits of their labor, to see all the hard work and distinct passion in what these wineries & vineyards do.” - @mvino1

The @napagreen Winery program launched in 2008, prompting Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, who spoke at the launch event hosted by @napavintners, to observe, “I’ve been at this for 30 years and this is the best, most well-thought-out program I’ve ever seen.”

This harvest, we’re celebrating 21 years of @napagreen, and the community leaders who have pioneered sustainability and climate action with us from the beginning.
The @napavintners (NVV) launched the Napa Green Winery program in 2008, and Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard joined as a keynote speaker, saying, “I’ve been at this for 30 years and this is the best, most well-thought-out program I’ve ever seen.“
Let’s raise a glass to the founding members certified as Climate Smart Napa Green Wineries, continuing to lead the industry.

Did you know that Napa Green is 21 years old? We want to celebrate and thank the community leaders who joined in from the beginning, and who have continued along the path of sustainability and climate action.
The @napavintners (NVV) stewarded @napagreen for its first fifteen years, and it is thanks to their vision and the leadership of these key founding members that Napa Green is still here to support growers and vintners in being the change in our community and industry.
Timeline: Napa Green Land was established in 2004. Napa Green Winery was established in 2008. The Land program ended in 2021, replaced by the new regenerative Napa Green Vineyard program.
